The Wackness

I went to see The Wackness recently. It’s a… nice film I suppose. I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it, which is almost worse than hating it really.

The Wackness tells the story of a young kid turning 18 in the summer of 1994 and falling in love for the first time. Luke (played by Josh Peck – as one IMDB commenter called him ”The fat kid from cable” who’s now not so fat) is a weed dealer and subsequently meets some interesting characters along the way. One of these characters is the step father of his young love (Ben Kingsley) who completely stole my heart away as the stoned psychiatrist giving life advice in exchange for weed. Elizabeth Thrilby (the best friend from Juno) is suitably adorable and mischievous as a first love should be.

The Wackness has all the right ingredients to be something special but it just doesn’t quite hit the mark. As a stoner movie, it’s laid back with a quirky sense of humour, but perhaps it’s too laid back. For me anyways, it needed a little more punch.

However, if you are bored and want to see an Olsen twin frenching someone three times her age, then this is the film for you! It woke me up for a minute anyways.
